Following Your Heart
We have all heard it . . . just follow your heart. What does God say about that?
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.” (Mark 7:21-23)
The problem with following our heart, is that we are actually following our feelings. Feelings are deceitful. We can be influenced by a look, a tone of voice, even the weather or what we eat.
If we can’t follow our heart, what should we follow? As followers of Christ, we have His Holy Spirit within us to help us. “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” (John 14:16) He has also given us His word. “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12).
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6
